NEW YORK NURSE: February 2008
Applications are being accepted for the Secor scholarships, the first to be awarded from the Secor Scholarship Fund established by the NYSNA Board of Directors in 2007.
Two scholarships will be awarded this spring:
Half of the endowment ($2,500) will be disbursed at the time that the scholarship is awarded. The second half will be disbursed upon submission of an official transcript for the first semester showing maintenance of at least a 3.5 GPA (out of 4.0). Application deadline for the 2008 Secor scholarships is March 14, 2007.
Applications and further information are available online at www.nysna.org or by calling the NYSNA Executive Office at 800.724.NYRN (6976), ext. 279.
Restrictions:
The Secor Scholarship Fund was made possible by a generous bequest from long-time NYSNA member Jane Secor, who died in 2004. She stipulated that her bequest be used to establish a nursing scholarship.
Secor had a distinguished, 44-year career as a nursing educator, administrator, and researcher. She served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II and was director of nursing at the State University of New York at Utica, where she established the post-RN BSN program. Secor was the author of three nursing texts and numerous articles, and also wrote poetry in her spare time.
Secor wrote this in 1997: “I believe that there is beauty in the written word, whether it is through the objectivity of scientific expression or the subjectivity of creative innovation.”
