NEW YORK NURSE: June 2008
While the Presidential race is getting all the headlines this summer, New Yorkers should be aware that all of the seats in the New York State Legislature will be up for election in November.
“These races are important because we are directly affected by state legislation,” said Shaun Flynn, director of the NYSNA Governmental Affairs Department. “The future of our priority bills rests with lawmakers who will be elected in the fall.”
The NYSNA Political Action Committee (NYSNA-PAC) is gathering information about candidates and their positions on nursing issues. The committee will make recommendations on which candidates should receive the association’s endorsement and support. In general, the PAC trustees try to identify candidates that are supportive of the nursing legislative agenda, are influential in state government, and have been accessible to NYSNA members and lobbyists.
Once the NYSNA Board of Directors has approved the NYSNA-PAC recommendations, the choices will be posted on www.nysna.org and listed in the September issue of New York Nurse. Some endorsements may be delayed until after the primary election on Sept. 9, so please check the website for updates.
If you have suggestions about candidate endorsements, plan to work on a political campaign, or are interested in working on a campaign, please contact the Governmental Affairs staff at 800-724-NYRN(6976), ext. 283 or e-mail legislative@nysna.org.
