NEW YORK NURSE: October 2010
The NYSNA Board of Directors has awarded the 2010 Secor Scholarships to Thomas Fielder and Denise Brennan.
The scholarships are awarded each year to a member who is pursuing additional education and to a family member of a member who is enrolled in nursing school.
Thomas Fielder is enrolled in the nursing program at St. Elizabeth College of Nursing in Utica. He is the son of NYSNA member Gail Fielder, who works at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica. Fielder, who had originally planned to become an artist, changed his career trajectory after spending time in an impoverished village in Mexico where he helped to administer aid.
Denise Brennan works for Westchester County Health Care Corporation and is pursuing her baccalaureate degree in nursing at Dominican College in Orangeburg. Brennan has seized every available opportunity to advance her education and believes she can best contribute to the nursing profession by becoming a nurse educator. She has plans to eventually pursue a graduate degree in education.
The Secor Scholarship Fund was made possible by a generous bequest from long-time NYSNA member Jane Secor, who died in 2004. A nursing editor, administrator, and researcher, Secor was the author of three nursing texts and numerous articles.
