NEW YORK NURSE: January/February 2012
Open enrollment begins for Leadership Academy
NYSNA is accepting applications for Leadership Academy Program
by Erin Silk
The NYSNA Leadership Academy (LA) is an innovative learning program designed to foster the development of nurses as leaders within the Association, as well as in their professional careers. Applications for the LA are accepted every year from January through April.
The Leadership Academy Program consists of three tiers:
- Tier I: Basic Studies is the first step in applying for the Leadership Academy. There are a total of five modules, including one webinar. NYSNA members must review and pass a short examination for each of the five modules. All five modules must be completed before an applicant can be considered for Tier II.
- Tier II: Leadership Fellows Program: Become a “Fellow” in the NYSNA Leadership Academy. The Leadership Academy Fellows Program is an intensive, year-long learning experience involving on-site lectures and webinars covering leadership styles, organizational change, problem-solving, legislative advocacy, parliamentary procedure and communication skills. Leadership Fellows have the opportunity to attend meetings and events, including Lobby Day, that will provide in-depth experience and knowledge about leadership and their nurses association. Fellows are expected to complete a project which they present to the Board of Directors during the NYSNA annual meeting. Fellows are paired with a mentor who will guide them throughout the leadership program.
- Tier III: Leadership Graduate Fellows Program: Applicants for the Tier III program must have successfully completed the Leadership Fellows Tier II Program, although this requirement may be waived with submission of a portfolio that includes descriptions of past leadership experiences. The Leadership Graduate Fellows Program is an intensive, year-long learning experience including on-site lectures, workshops and webinars in advanced leadership areas such as strategic planning, lateral violence in the workplace, developing a professional portfolio, informatics, publishing scholarly work, responsibilities of serving on a board of directors and grant writing. They have the choice to complete a project or mentor a Tier II Fellow during the course of the year.
Tier III fellows attend Lobby Day and the NYSNA annual meeting.
Participants in both Tier II and Tier III may choose from three focus tracks for their annual project, depending on their area of greatest interest: General Nursing Leadership, Labor Relations or Legislative Advocacy. Participants also earn contact hours for all coursework completed and are provided with travel reimbursement for all coursework and meetings attended.
