Approximately 400 NYSNA nurses rallied outside St. Vincent's Catholic Medical Center in Greenwich Village on Thursday, Jan 28 to protest the acquisition of the hospital by Continuum Health Partners. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer spoke to the protesters about the necessity of retaining the community hospital. Members of District 13 and SEIU walked the line in support of the St. Vincent's nurses. There are more than 700 NYSNA RNs currently working at St. Vincent's.
Continuum would close the emergency, acute care and surgical units within 60 to 90 days of the sale, leaving the Lower West Side of Manhattan without a hospital.
The nurses called upon Governor David Paterson to save the hospital.
