RNs can apply for both state and federal loan forgiveness programs. Under certain conditions, you may have all or part of your education loans forgiven or canceled in exchange for performing a qualifying service for a defined period of time.

New York State Nursing Faculty Loan Forgiveness Incentive Program

The Nursing Faculty Loan Forgiveness Incentive Program seeks to increase the number of nursing faculty members and adjunct clinical faculty teaching in the field of nursing in New York.

U.S. Perkins Loan Cancellation Program

This program is for borrowers with Perkins Loans who are: teachers; providers of early intervention services; law enforcement or corrections officers; nurse or medical technicians; employees of a child or family service agency; attorneys employed in a defender organization; firefighters; tribal college or university faculty members; librarians; speech-language pathologists; and staff members in an early childhood education program, in the military or working as a volunteer under the Peace Corps Act or Domestic Volunteer Service Act. Learn more about the U.S. Perkins Loan Cancellation Program.

NYSNA Secor Scholarship Program

The Secor Scholarship Fund, established in 2007, is made possible by a generous bequest by long-time NYSNA member Jane Secor, Ph.D., RN. Dr. Secor stipulated that the endowment be used for furthering nursing education.

Two scholarships are awarded annually:

  • $5,000 to a NYSNA member seeking a baccalaureate (or higher) degree in nursing.
  • $5,000 to a family member of a NYSNA member seeking a first degree in nursing.
