LOBBYING FOR SAFE STAFFING (4.5 CH)

Purpose: The purpose of this activity is to enable the learner to understand the relationship between lobbying and advocacy for nursing. The workshops prepare members to promote NYSNA’s legislative priorities and recognize the impact of lobbying as an advocate for nursing profession. Registered nurses will have the opportunity to work with member leaders who have experience in lobbying techniques; to gain insight and knowledge of effective lobbying techniques and become directly involved with key personnel to lobby for safe staffing.

Objectives: At the conclusion of this program the learner will be able to:

  1. Discuss NYSNA’s legislative priorities for 2014
  2. Describe the current legislative and political environment and how this impacts effective lobbying
  3. Describe the importance of nurses as advocates for the nursing profession and themselves
  4. Evaluate the effectiveness of lobbying and how it impacts the nursing environment

THE POLITICALLY ACTIVE NURSE: PART I (1.0 CH)

Purpose: Nurses, as professionals, must gain knowledge about the political system and develop professional advocacy values. Political involvement encompasses being knowledgeable about the political process, laws, and healthcare issues and policy. Politically active nurses accept the challenges and responsibilities in addressing injustices within the healthcare arena. Strategies for involvement in the political area will be reviewed, including political awareness, methods of lobbying, and advocating through the professional nurses association.

Objectives: At the conclusion of this program, the learner will be able to:

  1. Discuss how a bill becomes law
  2. Integrate knowledge of the Nurse Practice Act as it relates to the politically active nurse
  3. Distinguish the benefits of professional organization membership as they relate to professional practice and the political process

THE POLITICALLY ACTIVE NURSE: PART II (1.0 CH)

Purpose: Nurses, as professionals, must gain knowledge about the political system and develop professional advocacy values. Political involvement encompasses being knowledgeable about the political process, laws, and healthcare issues and policy. Politically active nurses accept the challenges and responsibilities in addressing injustices within the healthcare arena. Discussions will include the major committees at the state level that influence healthcare policy, methods of lobbying, and points at which nurses can influence a bill.

Objectives: At the conclusion of the program, this learner will be able to :

  1. Discuss the major committees at the state level that influence healthcare policy
  2. Discuss four points at which nurses can influence a bill
  3. Discuss four methods of lobbying 

The New York State Nurses Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

  • Continuing education contact hours will be awarded for this event. In order to receive contact hours for this program, participants must attend the entire session and complete an evaluation.
