LOBBYING FOR SAFE STAFFING (4.5 CH)Purpose: The purpose of this activity is to enable the learner to understand the relationship between lobbying and advocacy for nursing. The workshops prepare members to promote NYSNA’s legislative priorities and recognize the impact of lobbying as an advocate for nursing profession. Registered nurses will have the opportunity to work with member leaders who have experience in lobbying techniques; to gain insight and knowledge of effective lobbying techniques and become directly involved with key personnel to lobby for safe staffing. THE POLITICALLY ACTIVE NURSE: PART I (1.0 CH)Purpose: Nurses, as professionals, must gain knowledge about the political system and develop professional advocacy values. Political involvement encompasses being knowledgeable about the political process, laws, and healthcare issues and policy. Politically active nurses accept the challenges and responsibilities in addressing injustices within the healthcare arena. Strategies for involvement in the political area will be reviewed, including political awareness, methods of lobbying, and advocating through the professional nurses association. Objectives: At the conclusion of this program, the learner will be able to:

THE POLITICALLY ACTIVE NURSE: PART II (1.0 CH)Purpose: Nurses, as professionals, must gain knowledge about the political system and develop professional advocacy values. Political involvement encompasses being knowledgeable about the political process, laws, and healthcare issues and policy. Politically active nurses accept the challenges and responsibilities in addressing injustices within the healthcare arena. Discussions will include the major committees at the state level that influence healthcare policy, methods of lobbying, and points at which nurses can influence a bill. - Continuing education contact hours will be awarded for this event. In order to receive contact hours for this program, participants must attend the entire session and complete an evaluation.
