Caregivers at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, members of 1199SEIU, reached a contract settlement after a long struggle to win a living wage for the lowest paid workers. In May, NYSNA nurses traveled to Baltimore to rally in support of striking Hopkins caregivers. The new contract will provide significant wage increases for caregivers, many of whom are living below the poverty line.

“Congratulations to 1199SEIU caregivers at Johns Hopkins from the nurses of NYSNA! We were proud to rally with you in Baltimore in support of your struggle for a living wage and we are thrilled by your victory,” said Marva Wade, RN, NYSNA Executive Board Member. “If you’re working every day for one most prestigious healthcare institutions in the country, you should not be forced rely on public assistance or live in a homeless shelter. No caregiver should ever live in poverty. This victory will help ensure that caregivers have the resources they need to care for their own families. We will continue to stand united with 1199SEIU caregivers because we know that our patients receive the very best care when caregivers and nurses have good working conditions.”
