More than 1,000 RNs Lobby Albany for Safe Staffing and Single Payer universal healthcare
NYSNA members from across the state, joined by nursing students, converged on Albany Tuesday for the union’s annual Lobby Day, taking the occasion to continue our call for safe staffing ratios in healthcare facilities. Members from Long Island to Buffalo, and from the Metro NYC area, urged legislators in the State Assembly and Senate to support the Safe Staffing for Quality Care Act, legislation that would set minimum nurse-to-patient ratios.
Members also showed support for New York Health, legislation that would create universal single payer healthcare through a New York State “Medicare for All” law, saving New York consumers many billions a year, and making patient need the priority. Attendees heard remarks from legislators (including Assemblymember Richard Gottfried, primary sponsor of both pieces of legislation) and from NYSNA leadership and members, who urged the large audience to continue efforts towards achieving passage of both of these landmark healthcare initiatives.
