Are Hospitals Today More or Less Prepared for Surges?
Consolidation by healthcare systems has continued apace in New York State. This, in conjunction with other factors, has resulted in a decline of available patient beds state-wide and in many of our facilities.
During surges, such as the now yearly rush of patients due to influenza, RSV and COVID during the winter months, these bed occupancy rates can spell trouble for patients and staff alike. When patients can’t be admitted quickly from the ED or have to be warehoused in hallways for extended periods of time, an already untenable situation becomes even worse.
If your facility does not seem to be prepared for the flu surge this year, it is important to know that two government agencies provide clear, unequivocal guidance that should be followed. View that guidance and a NYSNA-developed check list to determine how well your facility is doing going into this flu season.
