Norovirus is the leading cause of foodborne illness outbreaks worldwide. In the United States, it is estimated that norovirus causes approximately 20 million illnesses each year.

Norovirus infections are common in all age groups, but young children (under 5 years old) and older adults (over 65 years old) are higher risk of severe illness. Those who are immunocompromised are also at high risk of severe disease. Long-term care facilities, hospitals, daycare centers, cruise ships, and dormitories have the highest risk of outbreaks.
