On Aug. 14, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) for a new mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other countries.

Unlike the 2022-2023 worldwide clade (strain) II mpox outbreak, the current outbreak is of a clade I mpox that is more transmissible, causes more severe disease and has a higher mortality rate. The mpox in this most recent outbreak appears to be spread through household, zoonotic (from animals) and sexual exposures. Like the 2022-2023 outbreak, the WHO expects the current outbreak to spread rapidly worldwide.
